Start small. Learn the oak. Perfect your batch. Then scale.

The 1 Litre American Oak Aging Barrel is the best place to learn the craft of small-barrel aging. Handcrafted from American white oak with a medium char, the compact 1L format creates a high wood-to-liquid ratio so you can watch colour, aroma and oak-driven flavour develop over a matter of weeks.

1L — The Learning Barrel

If you are new to barrel aging, the 1L gives you a fast, practical education without committing a large volume of whiskey, rum, tequila or cocktail to your first experiment. Taste your batch regularly and learn exactly what the oak contributes: deeper colour, vanilla, caramelized sugar and crème brûlée notes, toasted oak, spice and tannin.

A small barrel does not create a literal age statement, but its greater oak contact can develop pronounced oak-driven flavour in weeks that would take much longer to build in a full-size barrel. Around the four-week mark, many first batches already show dramatic changes in colour, aroma and flavour.

Perfect the Method Before You Scale

The 1L is your test barrel. Use it to refine a whiskey finish, experiment with rum or tequila, develop a barrel-aged Old Fashioned or Manhattan, and learn how frequently you need to taste. Once you find the flavour profile and timing you want, you can repeat the method in a larger barrel with much more confidence.

Recommended First-Batch Aging

Begin tasting around the 3-week mark. A typical first batch is approximately 3–5 weeks. The calendar is only a guide—when the spirit reaches the balance of vanilla, sweetness, oak and spice you want, bottle it.
