Received a one litre barrel for Christmasfrom my daughter. Put Alberta premium in it. Six weeks later, WoW can’t begin to tell you how smooth with great character. Will be purchasing a 5 litre barrel very soon. How many runs can one expect out of a barrel? I assume that each fill will take a little longer to mature/age. Would that be an accurate assumption. Have you any recommendations for my next batch. Crown, Forty Creek……I’m listening! Thanks for the great product.
We love hearing all the positive vibes on our Urban Barrels. Your absolutely right in saying that every batch will take a little bit longer. There are always different variables size, fill, grain, each barrel is different. That being said you’ll get 4 to 6 great uses out of each barrel depending on if your filling it completely and how long your aging each batch. Once I’m done with a barrel I love flipping it to hot sauces or maple syrup.
What did you age in your first batch?
Bill?️I’ve had great results with Forty Creek. Try using an ounce of maple syrup for every two litres.
Send us a picture we’d love to post it.
Alberta premium, 6-8 weeks ?, 1 litre keg. Will buy 5 litre and blend a couple of popular brands maybe 1 40 creek 1 crown and 1 Alberta premium. However I’m totally interested in recommendations. Do you have any?
I always start a barrel off with a bourbon myself before doing that though I like to put in a secondary cure, essence or extract. Might be 4 to 5 ounces of maple syrup/butter ripple/coffee/orange bitters ect… for 3 to 4 days I let the barrel absorb these flavors. After the secondary cure, I’ll empty out whatever is left over and allow to drip dry. Then add your favorite whisky/bourbon and that’s when the real fun starts. Canadian whisky’s I’ve had great success with our Forty Creek, North of 7, Weiser’s and Crown Royal.
Side note after 2 weeks in a barrel with Crown Royal you basically have Northern Harvest!
For your secondary cure would you rotate the barrel a couple of times?
Yes, exactly! You’re a natural!
Please share photos and recipes we’d love to see you barrel.
I recommend and secondary cure before you age you next batch. I have a couple of ideas for you. Please email us at info@urbanbarrel.ca
